Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage preventative maintenance on your HVAC system frequently, but this doesn’t just mean annual tune-ups – it also means checking your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system running smoothly and improve your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! Now is the best time to examine your filter, as winter comes to a conclusion and summer is on the horizon. There are many benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Increasing the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to cause a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that gathers on your filter can force your whole system to run harder than it should to keep your home cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can escalate your utility bills and cause your system to overheat.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The goal of an air filter is that it catches contaminants through your air system before it enters your home. As the filter gets older, the less efficient it is in grabbing things like dust and mold that can impact the health and comfort of your house, particularly if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it circulating in your home. A quality, clean air filter will help your household breathe easy and remain healthy during allergy season.

Check your system or chat with your local HVAC expert for recommendations on how often you should be changing your filter. For most filters through Bon Air Service Company, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter that is offered. Not sure if it’s the ideal time to change your air filter?
