Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Grand Prairie just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have accumulated during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Grand Prairie will more than likely go up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Bon Air Service Company in Grand Prairie, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re related to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
